Sudley Cinema Club - Lilies of the Field

Sidney Poitier won an Academy Award for best actor for his standout performance in this modest, beautiful 1963 film. Lilies of the field is directed tenderly and with restraint by Ralph Nelson from a light-handed yet deeply effective screenplay by James Poe, based on a novel by William E. Barrett. Poitier plays the role of Homer Smith, a journeyman labourer, who is roaming the countryside, drifting and working. One day he stops at a farm encountering five impoverished nuns. Lilia Skala is formidable and endearing as Mother Maria, the highest-ranking sister, who is convinced that God has answered her prayers and sent Homer to fix the roof. Staying and working in the peaceful calm of the Arizona desert, Homer learns more from the nuns than he ever could have anticipated.

Day Trip to Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury was our latest day trip destination and with a coach full of residents we set off for a day in Shropshire. The town centre is packed with timber-framed black & white buildings, steep narrow streets and alleyways. In fact it boasts over 600 listed buildings including the Castle, now a regimental museum and the world-famous Shrewsbury Abbey, home of the fictional Brother Cadfael. The River Severn forms a loop around the town centre offering gentle riverside walks or you can enjoy a trip on the new pleasure boat Sabrina.

Sudley Cinema Club - Some Like it Hot

Our film tonight was the Oscar winning "Some Like it Hot". As well as being acknowledged as one of Marilyn Monroe's finest performances, Some Like It Hot is a comedy which presents sharp satire and zany slapstick from acting talents led by Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. It's Billy Wilder's film as much as anything else, as the comic genius manages to offer plenty of laughs in this cross-dressing classic. Some Like It Hot bridges a gap between traditional Hollywood screwball comedies and the dawning of a saucier, more permissive era. For Monroe it's her sexiest and funniest role. As well as looking great, she shows natural comedy talent while Curtis and Lemmon have rarely bettered their performances. From the opening scene to the classic closing line of "nobody's perfect", this film is an absolute joy.

Annual General Meeting of Sudley Area Residents' Association

Following our Passport to Liverpool, we held the AGM of SARA.

The AGM report can be downloaded from the link below:-

http://www.sudley.org.uk/SARA Annual Report 2008-09.pdf

The following Trustees had indicated their willingness to stand for re-election and were voted in en bloc: Brenda Brown, Ray Brown, Jean Browne, Dot Caples, Edna Charnock, Barbara Fielding, Carol Hemmings, Steven Kearney, Eileen Rich and Peter Urmston.

Nominations for the Officer posts were as follows:

Chairman: Steven Kearney
Secretary: Dot Caples
Treasurer: Ray Brown

All three officers were elected unopposed.

Residents had an opportunity to address questions to SARA as well as to the Police and the local Councillors. No questions were raised but there were a couple of contributions from the floor praising and thanking the Trustees for the efficient manner in which the association is run.

Passport to Liverpool

As part of Adult Learners' Week, we held a special screening of the film "Passport to Liverpool". The event was sponsored by the Workers' Educational Association and included a Q&A session with Dave Cotterill.

Passport to Liverpool is a 50 minute film with an interesting take on what is unique about Liverpool and its people. Using interviews with ex Dockers, ex seafarers, academics, retired street traders and Joe public, it explores various the characteristics that have contributed to forming Liverpool’s identity. A strand running through the film is the river pilot John Curry bringing an ACL container ship into Gladstone Dock. The film keeps cutting back to observe its progress and it brings home to the audience the highly dangerous waterway that is the River Mersey and highlights the skills needed to navigate it. Given the city’s history as a major seaport second only to London at one point in its history, it is surprising to know that it is such a difficult place to berth.

We were particularly pleased to have one of the film’s producers, Dave Cotterill, with us who, for half an hour, took questions from the floor. The reaction to the film was very positive and discussion could certainly have gone on a lot longer.

Miniature Gardens at Sudley Infant School

Children from Robins, Woodpeckers and Sparrows have been working very hard to design and create miniature gardens to bring into school. I was asked to come along to school this afternoon and pick a winning garden out of each of the three classes. The garden designs were excellent, clearly a lot of thought and creativity had gone into each and every one which made it all that more difficult to pick three winners! A special assembly was held and each of the winners were presented with a mini gardening kit and certificate. Everyone who brought a miniature garden in will also receive a certificate.
